Ryan Reynolds to Wear CGI Green Lantern Suit

When I read Towleroad’s headline in my Twitter feed this morning, I nearly shit a brick. The headline reads: Ryan Reynolds Won’t Wear Costume As Green Lantern. I couldn’t read the full article on my iPhone while on Muni. But, based solely on the headline, I was pissed. Was Ryan pulling a Tom Welling and going sans costume? I was ready to boycott the damn movie.

The first thing I did when I sat down at my desk was check out full the post at Towleroad. Okay, okay. Cool down. I’m better now. Turns out that the costume designer wants to make the costume entirely computer generated. Now, that I can get behind! Here’s what the costumer designer had to say:

“[Costume designer Ngila Dickson] was tasked with trying to find a way to do something that stands apart from all of the other superheroes spandex suit designs we’ve seen in the past. Honestly, isn’t the look becoming overused? Remember, the Green Lantern suit is something that should look alien — it needs to seem other worldly. It encompasses any creature that wears the ring, and Hal Jordan is the first human to ever wear the suit. This was a chance for Dickson to do something different. You also have to consider that Hal changes into the suit multiple times in mid scene, and the cg also allows him to do this. I’ve heard that when the cg is complete, the suit will look like a manifestation of his power. And while I couldn’t confirm this, I’ve heard that DC’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns has seen the designs and given them his blessing. The suit is lined with white LEDs, which I initially thought might be used to give a practical glow (kind of like how Billy Crudup wore blue LEDs to give the actors around Dr. Manhattan a blue glow in Watchmen), but I’ve since been told might just be for mo-cap tracking purposes.”

Green Lantern: First Flight

My sister and her boyfriend bought me the Green Lantern: First Flight DVD for Christmas. They could not have bought a more perfect gift. I’ve been meaning to watch it for a while now. It was one of only two gifts I opened on Christmas day (I specifically asked my family not to buy presents for me this year). My eyes lit up when I tore off the wrapping paper and saw the GL DVD. It’s rare that people can surprise me with gifts. I’m incredibly difficult to shop for and so people end up asking me what I want. Needless to say, I was completely surprised by this gift.

One night instead of watching endless reruns of Bravo shows, I decided to retire to my room and watch First Flight on my laptop. I got so wrapped up in the movie that I didn’t hear my dad come in and tap me on the shoulder to tell me that someone was on the phone for me. When he tapped me I literally jumped a few inches off my bed and screamed, “oh crap!” The movie was that engaging.

It tells the origin story of Hal Jordan as he becomes sector 2814′s green guardian. Shortly after acquiring the ring, the plot jumps right into Sinestro’s betrayal of the Guardians. It’s a great story, actively paced, and the characters are well developed. Chris Meloni voices Hal Jordan which is a good fit. Christian and I were just saying how HOT Chris Meloni is, especially when he got all naked and gay in OZ. So, it was nice to know that such a hot beefy stud was behind the animated Hal.

I appreciated Hal’s character development. He isn’t immediately accepted and has to prove himself to the other Lanterns. This is the same thing that endeared me to Kyle Rayner when he became a GL. It’s a great plot device that helps the viewers/readers identify with and relate to the character as he grapples with what it means to wield such a great responsibility.

The Sinestro story line was a perfect choice for this movie. It’s got everything you could want: Good guys vs. bad guys, an unexpected call to glory, proof of heroic character, betrayal, deceit, fall from grace, a space battle, etc.

My only worry is that because the animated movie was so good, the live action movie now has a tough act to follow. In fact, I’m concerned that the live action movie will shy away from the Sinestro story. Ryan Reynolds/Hal Jordan needs his arch nemesis to make the movie amazing. The Superman movies have failed in this way by constantly pitting the most powerful being on Earth against a human nemesis. Superman movies would be so much better if he were pitted against Doomsday or Darkseid or any number of super villains. I can only hope that the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern character gets a super villain nemesis to challenge him to discover his inner greatness.

Even if the live action movie sucks, at least DC Comics gave us GL fanboys and fangirls an exciting, action-packed animated film to enjoy.

Ryan Reynolds Talks About “Green Lantern” Movie

lantern_movie

Via SocialiteLife:

In a recent interview with MTV News, Ryan Reynolds discussed his highly anticipated film “Green Lantern.” With shooting set to begin within the next year, Reynolds best described the film by saying, “It is [an origin] story to a certain degree, but it’s not a labored origin story, where the movie begins in the third act. The movie starts when it starts. We find out Hal is the guy fairly early on, and the adventure begins.”

Reynolds went on to suggest that viewers will likely “walk away from this first film, and the moments that [they will] remember and the moments that [will mean so much to them], not unlike ‘Iron Man’ [will be] the moments where the guy’s not in the suit.”

With “Green Lantern” being just one of two comic movies in the works for Reynolds, the other is “Deadpool,” it appears that viewers can look forward to a ton of action, and some memorable moments!

Adium Dock Icons: Green Lantern and Batman

I installed the newest Adium update today, and somehow that zonked the application in the process. So, I had to go to the Adium site to download a fresh copy of the app. While there I noticed that they have tons of categories of customized skins and dock icons. To my surprise, I found some Green Lantern icons and Batman icons. There were several other comic-related dock icons, but I only needed the Hal Jordan Rebirth Adium icon to make my day super awesome.

Ryan Reynolds is Hal Jordan in Green Lantern Movie?

green-lantern

The big comic-book-movie news du jour is that Ryan Reynolds (and not Bradley Cooper, as I had previously posted) has been cast as Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern movie. I’m not sure how I feel about that. Ryan is usually so silly, even when playing a badass role like in Blade 3. However, he did pull of psycho crazy in The Amityville Horror. I never saw Wolverine (gasp, I know, how dare I call myself a fanboy?) so I can’t speak to how good he was in that movie. I’m at least glad that they picked someone with a rockin’ body to play my favorite green super hero.

Studly Bradley Cooper to Play Green Lantern?

bradley_cooper_00

HitFix has the Green Lantern movie casting update (below). All I have to say, is HELL YES. This dude is the hotness. And, I like that last name of his quite a bit too…

Via HitFix:

“Who the hell is Bradley Cooper?!”

That was my producer on the horror film we’ve been trying to cast for the last six months when I first brought up the idea of casting Bradley Cooper as the lead in the film. I’ve liked the guy’s work since the first season of “Alias,” but when you’re casting a film, specifically in the independent world, there’s a list of people that they’ll consider, and how much money your financiers will give you depends largely on who you have playing the lead in the film. And when his name came up last summer, at my suggestion, it was quickly apparent that no one signing the checks knew or cared who he was.

Man, are they gonna be sorry.

I just got out of a screening of “The Hangover,” and while my review for that is embargoed and won’t be published until closer to the film’s release, I can safely say that everyone involved is going to have a very, very good summer. And Cooper in particular really steps up in his first comic lead. He’s demonstrated some real range over the last few years, and this feels like a sort of graduation for him as a performer.

But his biggest role yet is the one he may be playing for Warner Bros. later this summer. I’ve just spent the last hour or so on the phones, tracking down a rumor I heard, and HitFix can exclusively report that Bradley Cooper is now one of the guys most likely to don the suit and slip on the power ring as The Green Lantern for director Martin Campbell.

Let’s be clear: they have not hired him yet. But the process is far enough along that this is more than just a meeting or some spot on a wish list. Keep in mind that Campbell likes to see a lot of people when he’s casting… and even when he’s screen-testing, he seems willing to explore as many options as possible… but with the film set to shoot later this summer, they’ve got to start making their choices, and now’s the time to put people in front of the camera and see who really works in the suit.

I’m not a betting man, but if I were, I would bet that Cooper’s going to be the guy, and I’m going to also bet that the next time someone has that conversation about casting a movie, and they’re running down a list of names, no one is going to have to ask “Who the hell is Bradley Cooper?” because they’ll know.

I Heart Green Lantern

If you know anything about me, you know that I looooove Green Lantern. Don’t believe me? Need proof? Here’s a snap shot of my desk at work:

If there’s ever an intergalactic crisis, I feel very safe with 12 Green Lanterns within arms reach! (And yes, I am a huge dork.)

Green Lantern Movie to Start Filming?

OMG. I had a nerdgasm when Lene sent me this link. A Hal Jordan Green Lantern movie would make me so so so so so so happy.

According to a script review — spoilers! — posted earlier this month at Latino Review, “The structure adheres closely to what I call — the ’superhero origin movie paradigm.’ Our hero, in this case Hal Jordan has a fear, limitation, block, or wound at the beginning of the story which he has to overcome (his character arc) or have some control by the midpoint of the script which is usually the time he becomes the superhero for the first time ie: Batman Begins.”
