Sherlock Holmes Review

I saw Sherlock Holmes the day after Christmas with my mom, sister, and sister’s boyfriend. The movie was visually stunning and generally we all liked it. But that was it. We just liked it. None of us were wowed or amazed. The dialogue was cute and the characters were all well-done. I especially liked the “Mentalist” take on Sherlock. And adding a flippant, cocky attitude to Mr. Holmes was fun too. The new Watson didn’t work quite as well, though. I like Jude Law, and I like the character he brought to the screen. But it just didn’t believe him as Watson.

One thing I appreciated was the nods to the homoerotic elements of the relationship between Holmes and Watson. Law and Downey, Jr. were great in that regard. Too bad Downey, Jr. was spouting off on Letterman using the “homo” word. Sigh.

You can absolutely tell that Guy Ritchie was involved in this movie. The fight scenes are some of the best parts of the movie, even if slightly out of place.

The movie is passable and enjoyable. But, it fell short of my expectations. I’d even go so far as to say you could wait for DVD to see it.
