Study: Young People Watch Less TV

A new study by Deloitte shows that today’s young people (the millennials) watch less TV than Gen Xers do. But I don’t think this statement is accurate:

“Put another way, the older you get, the more you watch…”

I’m sure this was just worded poorly. But what it seems to indicate is that you watch more TV as you get older. But this study didn’t track people over time. It was comparing generations (millenials vs. Xers). It’s quite possible that Xers watched as much TV now as they did when they were teens. In my opinion, it’s not about how old you are. Instead, it’s more likely related to what media you grew up with. The internet and video game weren’t quite as pervasive when we Xers were kids. So, our medium of choice is TV. The millenials were born with internet piped directly into their eye-sockets and video games growing out of their palms (a la Borg). So, it’s understandable that they would watch less TV and spend more time with other media.

The truly definitive study would include TV habits of the Xers when they were teens, and then ten years from now would also report on the TV habits of the millenials. Then, and only then, we would be able to evaluate if getting older makes you more prone to watch more TV.
