How To Get a Cork Out of the Inside of a Wine Bottle

This is so dope! My only question is, how would you do this with liquid still in the bottle? Thanks to Scott for posting this and other helpful hints over at GrowthPop!

Obama and McCain Define “Rich” Differently

McCain says that the “rich” (i.e., people who should be in the upper tax bracket) are people who make $5M or more per year. Obama claims the number is closer to $250,000 per year. This isn’t surprising given their very different backgrounds. It also suggests to me that McCain is richer than rich and has no concept of how poor off most of America is.

Will Lower Oil Prices Stop this Offshore Drilling Idiocy?

Oil dropped to $113 today, due in part to the dollar strengthening against world currencies.

So, with the dollar getting stronger and the price of oil falling (soon to be followed by the price of gas dropping), will Americans stop clamoring for the repeal of the offshore drilling ban? (Which, I may point out would do almost nothing to actually lower the cost of gas at the pump.) I hope Pelosi and Obama don’t cave when October rolls around. Of course, best case scenario would be if they didn’t have to cave because the topic is moot by then. We shall see…

FDR’s Grandson Comments on Social Security

Awesome.

“It’s hard to remember now, but before Social Security, nearly half of America’s seniors lived in poverty. After a lifetime of playing by the rules and working hard, there was no guarantee of a secure retirement.

“My grandfather, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a majority of Americans thought that was wrong.

“They believed that lifting our seniors out of poverty is a reflection of our nation’s core values.

“That’s why my grandfather signed the Social Security act seventy three years ago today. One of the great successes of the 20th Century, today Social Security lifts nearly 13 million seniors and 1.3 million children out of poverty.

Does McCain’s “The One” Ad Have a Hidden Message?

Some think so. I reached out to the progressive Christians I know, and they did not know much about this. They don’t believe in Messianic and/or Evangelical teachings. I’d be fascinated to know more about this.

A snippet:

…this ad was not done by some campaign volunteer with a bit of editing experience for (as McCain suggests) his supporters amusement. This was a professionally cut, edited, and produced ad full of sinister dog-whistles for evangelical ears.

At best it is suggesting supporters of Obama are idol-worshipers. At its worst it is suggesting that Sen. Obama is some kind of anti-Christ.

The McCain campaign is unquestionably targeting the 44 million+ Americans who have read the Left Behind series. The makers of the ad chose all of Obama’s quotes very carefully and filled it with image after image equating Senator Obama to the anti-Christ, and especially to Nicolae Carpathia, the anti-Christ in the popular end times novels….

The Adultery Double Standard: McCain vs. Edwards

This is really amazing to watch. Hannity just keeps repeating his talking point, “five and a half years of being tortured…,” while Colmes tries to point out the hypocrisy. Basically it’s this: the Right says Edwards can never be trusted on anything else, ever, because he cheated on his wife. But John McCain also admitted to cheating on his wife. So, shouldn’t we also not trust John McCain on anything else? Of course the Right has a conniption fit trying to backpedal off that topic.

The simple answer is this: If you’re going to attack Edwards over this like you did Clinton, you’d better play fair and attack McCain too. I still think this Right wing attack on Edwards is an attempt to destroy his chances of holding any sort of political appointment in the Obama administration.

John McCain Forgets

Wow.

As DailyKos puts it:

Given that McCain has been using the situation in Georgia to pretend he’s the president (speaking of presumptuous), it’s not surprising that he wants to present this as the biggest crisis ever. And he’s right, assuming you forget the Gulf War, and Somalia, and the Rwandan Genocide, and the earlier war in Georgia, and the breakup of Yugoslavia and all the wars that spawned, and 9/11, and Afghanistan, and Iraq and North Korean nuclear testing, and the war in Lebanon, and Darfur — then this is the first serious international crisis since the end of the Cold War.

A funny, if slightly offensive, ad that illustrates how buying gas supports terrorists. Thanks to my buddy PirateS for sharing.

Robert Downey Jr. Disses The Dark Knight

Oh Robert Downey Jr.: I love you and yet you make me shake my head in disappointment at the same time:

My whole thing is that that I saw ‘The Dark Knight’. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’ I loved ‘The Prestige’ but didn’t understand ‘The Dark Knight’. Didn’t get it, still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I’m like, ‘I get it. This is so high brow and so f–king smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.’ You know what? F-ck DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.”

Obamacans: Republicans for Obama

Estephania sent me the DailyKos post about prominent Republicans who support Obama. She suggested I send it on to my parents.

An update on my dad and his voting tendencies: I spoke with my dad the other day at lunch time. I mentioned that I’d sent him Obama’s book and a few others. He told me right off the bat that he could still never vote for McCain because McCain supports the war and wants to give corporations and rich people tax cuts. (Apparently my mom gave me some misinformation regarding my dad’s support for McCain.) Big sigh of relief. My dad also told me that his lifelong best friend who now represents his Native American tribe has switched his voting allegiance. He went to Washington recently, as he’s done many times before. But this time, he met with Obama’s people. And when he returned he told my dad and mom he was switching from McCain to Obama. That’s pretty significant since my dad’s best friend is a Vietnam veteran and long-time Republican.

My dad and I proceeded to talk about Schwarzenegger’s cutting of state employees’ salaries. We both agreed it was a political ploy and the Swarzzie should be ashamed. My dad even informed me that no CA state budget has been passed on time in decades. I did not know that. We also spoke about the state of education in California, and the dire need for reform and funding for that reform. My dad even supported the increase of the state sales tax. In his words, if California’s population continues to grow, then it’s obviously necessary to increase taxes to support the infrastructure used by the people; namely education, roads, safety services, etc. (I still don’t understand why my dad still calls himself a Republican!)

I chatted with my dad again last night and he’d started reading Obama’s book and One Party Country. He said that Obama’s book was a little too laden with anecdotes and story-telling. I agreed, and said that’s why I stalled midway through. My dad said, “Well, that’s why I’ve started skimming for the important policy stuff and skipping the story telling stuff. I understand he had to make the book long enough to be a book, but it really could do without some of that filler.” I couldn’t agree more. That being said, we both agreed that Obama’s book does help reassure its readers that Obama knows what he’s talking about and would be ready to lead on January 20, 2009.

I loved my dad’s comments about One Party Country: “It’s about how Rove was sneakily trying to ensure Republican dominance. That’s no surprise since Rove pretty clearly admits to that. It’s just a little scary reading about how far they’re willing to go to make that a reality.”

I really do love my dad. It’s added a whole new depth to our relationship now that we can discuss politics instead of arguing. I still remember when I was in sixth grade and was studying up to portray Dukakis in the mock debates at school. (My sixth-grade arch nemesis was playing Bush.) My dad and I actually started arguing over whether Dukakis was a bleeding heart liberal, and whether Democrats deserved to lead the country because all they wanted to do was give his money to poor, lazy people (Reagan’s blathering about welfare queens had clearly worked its magic on my dad). Of course my mom, the JFK Democrat, joined in the argument on my side and it got rather heated. Ah memories…

New Obama Ad Hits McCain on Economics
