Sarah Thyre: Dark at the Roots
SnarkyNinja and I went to a book reading at Books, Inc. tonight. Kid Benacker IM’d me the other day and said I should go… that it would be funny. And if there’s one thing that kid knows, it’s funny. True to Benacker’s forecast, Sarah was great. She showed up in a short, sparkly, purple-sequined dress, of which several men in the room were immediately covetous. I recognized her from her tv appearances on Strangers With Candy (she was Coach Cherri).
I hadn’t read her book Dark at the Roots: A Memoir before the event, but that didn’t matter much. Sarah read two stories from her memoir. Both were lol-funny and, playing to the Castro crowd, she made sure each had sexual content. I thought the vagina story was an odd choice for a gay crowd, but we all laughed our asses off anyway. Once I’m done with my lineup of political non-fiction, I’m going to pick up Dark at the Roots.
